About M.G.R.

M.G.R – a magical name for the people of Tamilnadu state, India. Every man and woman knows the person of this name even after 25 years of his death. He was born on 17th January 1917 to Melakkath Gopala Menon and Maruthur Sathyabama in Nawalapitiya near Kandy, Srilanka.  After his father’s death, his mother with three children came to Tamilnadu, India for their survival.  So she joined her children (MGR’s elder brother M.G.Chakrabani and M.G.R) in Original Boys Company – a drama troup. 

As he was experienced too many difficulties and poverty during his childhood, he was inspired by the pro-rationalism. At the same time he was not aggressively appeared atheist. He lost his young sister in the childhood itself. He also lost both his first wife Bargavi alias Thangamani and later married Sathanandavathi who also died soon due to Tuberculosis. Then during his acting career he met V.N.Janaki a well known the then actress as the pair in the film “Marutha Naattu Ilavarsi” in 1950, both fell in love and married. Before this film they acted in the film named “Mohini” in 1948.

After 1948, he graduated to leading roles to many Tamil films and dominated the Tamil Film Industry for over three decades. At the same time he entered into the political party Dravida Munnetra Kalagam to build a large political base by his popularity as a film hero.

In 1972, after his expulsion from Dravaida Munnetra Kalagam he started a political party named "All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kalagam". His party contested many places in Tamilandu therby won some seats and gradually became popularity between the people of Tamilnadu. In 1977, he was elected first time as the Chief Minister of Tamilandu and never be thrown his crown until his death.

He was a devotee of Kollur Mookambika, in Udipi District of Karnataka state, India and gifted a half kilogram Golden sword to the temple. He was the founder of Satya Studios and MGR Pictures which had produced many Tamil films.

In October 1984, he was diagnosed with the disease of Kidney Failure and undergone Kidney Transplant which was donated by the daughter of his brother M.G.Chakrabani. After a long discrete illness he was died on December 24, 1987, a day before the celebration of Christmas. Many of the Christians never forget the day as they faced too much difficulties during the transit across the state.
